Abstract

Chromatographic separation of capsaicin (C) from Capsicum and its oleoresin was investigated. Techniques tested were: TLC on silica gel G, TLC on kieselguhr and paper chromatography, solvents of different polarities being tested with each technique. TLC techniques were not fully satisfactory, due to poor separation of C from a yellow pigment. Best results were obtained with chloroform:ethanol (99:1) mixtures on silica gel G, and with petroleum ether; ethanol (99:1) mixtures on kieselguhr. Paper chromatography with methanol:buffer (pH 9.4) mixtures gave good separation of C, best results being obtained with a 60:40 vol./vol. mixture. Tables of results are given.
