Additional Information: Liquid emulsion membranes (LEMs) have developed into a versatile technique for a variety of applications involving selective and controlled transport of biochemicals. Biological applications cover the controlled delivery of drugs from capsules, detoxification of the circulatory system, and recovery of useful compounds from waste streams and selective separation of products from fermentation broths. The extraction of organic acids from its dilute solutions by means of liquid emulsion membranes (LEM) was studied. Depending upon the solubility of carrier in different diluents, an optimum composition for emulsion formation and extraction was designed. Liquid emulsion membrane was formed with 5% w/w carrier Aliquat 336, 12% w/w surfactant Span 80, 83%w/w diluent Kerosene with 5% w/v Sodium carbonate solution used as stripping reagent in the ratio of 1:1(Vs:Vm), providing up to 80-90% removal of the organic acids from the feed solution. The effects of various experimental conditions on the extraction of organic acids were investigated. The effect of the concentrations of surfactant, contact time, the stirring speed during contact time, ratio of volume of feed to that of emulsion, ratio of stripping reagent and organic membrane phase, concentration of stripping reagent, the external phase concentration on emulsion formation and extraction were studied. The LEM developed was also used for the extraction of acetic acid, ascorbic acid, lactic acid, formic acid along with citric acid. The process of De-Emulsification and the effect of contact time on de-emulsification process was also studied.
