Additional Information: | A study was conducted to determine the antioxidant potential of Centella asiatica aqueous extract (CAAE) and neuroprotective effect in various in vitro systems against 3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NPA, a known neurotoxicant) induced oxidative damage. Significant antioxidant activity was showed by CAAE in all the chemical models studied. Quenching of DPPH radical and reducing capacity of ferric ions to ferrous was evident at lower concentrations and may be attributed to the high polyphenolic content in the extract. 2. CAAE showed marked protection against 3-NPA induced oxidative alterations as measured by concentration dependent reduction in the levels of ROS, HP and LPO in brain homogenates, mitochondrial fractions under in vitro conditions. Results demonstrate that the aqueous extract of C. asiatica has pronounced effects like cognitive enhancing ability and the antioxidant property by decreasing the lipid peroxidation and augmenting the endogenous antioxidant enzymes in brain. These effects may be attributed to the antioxidant compounds present in C. asiatica and in particular, the flavonoids, quercetin, catechin and rutin that are known to be potent antioxidants. |
