Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: The leaf extracts of Plectranthus amboinicus showed antimicrobial activity against the food borne pathogens Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Antimutagenic effect against methyl methane sulfonate induced mutation in the tester strains of Salmonella (TA 98). Acetone and Ethyl acetate extracts were found to be more effective against the growth of the foodborne pathogens in this present study. The loss of absorbing material at 260 nm and 280 nm was seen to be more in Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Yersinia enterocolitica when treated with MIC of Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extracts as compared to 0.5 MIC of the leaf extracts. There was a decrease or increase in the protein leakage of these microorganisms after treating with Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extracts. Free oxygen content in the solution increased with the increase in the concentration of Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extracts indicating reduction in population of bacteria in solution. The calf thymus DNA was protected against degradation by H2O2 and UV treatment and as the concentration of extract was increased better protection was observed. Membrane expansion assay carried out in liposomal vesicle showed no differences among various treatments with extracts of different concentration indicating these extract may not have any effect on cell membrane. The antimicrobial activities of Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extracts can be an interesting field of study for application in the food industries.
