Abstract

Alterations in morphological characteristics and metabolic activities of coliforms isolated from faeces of rats fed terramycin over a long period have been studied. Coliforms from terramycin-fed group show tolerance to the antibiotic; those from vitamins-supplemented group also exhibit tolerance though to a lesser degree. No noticeable effect of in vitro addition of vitamins on growth is observable. Coliforms from antibiotic-fed group have lower capacity to utilize pyruvate and glucose; those from the group fed the antibiotic with vitamins show enhanced oxygen uptake with several tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates.
