Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Ayurveda hails guduchi as one of the medicines that can “stave off diseases”. The chemical constituents identified in this plant include alkaloids, glycosides, sterols, lactones and fatty acids. One or more of these constituents could be immunomodulatory and help in disease prevention. There have been recent reports of a 550 kD polysaccharide from guduchi possessing immunomodulatory function. The present study focuses on the protein components of guduchi. Tinospora is rich in proteins. The proteins in guduchi extract were separated based on the difference in their molecular weights by gel permeation chromatography. Three pools G1, G2, G3 were made accordingly and their mitogenic potency studied by the MTT assay. Cell proliferation was tested invitro using these three pools. The pool G3 with protein in the 20-30 kD mol.wt. range showed mitogenic activity. The presence of lectins was also checked for in each of these pools by ELLSA. Pools G2 and G3 showed the presence of lectins. It is concluded that the immunomodulatory properties of guduchi could also be attributed to the protein component in addition to the recently identified polysaccharide, and that the protein component could include one or more lectins.
