Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Plant Cells have been highly valued for the production of valuable products of very different structural and organizational level for the benefit of man. The primary metabolites which are common to all plants are carbohydrate, protein and fats which are produced abundantly. The secondary metabolites which are specific to each plants are of high value. Plant secondary metabolites are often produced only in small quantities in a particular types of cells of rare plant species, it is always not feasible to isolate secondary metabolites from intact plants. Plant cell culture can be an alternative way to produce these compounds continuously under artificially controlled conditions. Mostly plant cell culture have been adopted to produce most of the important pharmaceutical compounds. The commercial production has been successful so far , several compounds like shikonin, berberine, and ginseng saponins are produced. Recently more focus has been given on the production of pigments, flavors and sweeteners by tissue culture. In this report we describe plant cell cultures and many extraction procedures for the extraction of plant secondary metabolites like carotenoids, anthocyanins and stevioside. Anthocyanins and carotenoids pigments of high commercial value are used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The stevioside has been used as a sweetener.
