Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Gunny sacks are used to germinate ragi which is a very unhygienic process. Also, manual labour is also required to transfer the ragi during the different stages of germination. Hence, the basic need of the project was to develop a machine wherein soaking, germination and drying of ragi could be carried out in a single place or container. Further, it was found necessary to mix the grains very gently during germination to give each grain sufficient contact with fresh air for uniform germination. Another feature required of the unit was to dry the grains in-situ. The objectives of the project were to develop a unit to facilitate soaking, germination and drying with minimal or no material movement between operations; facilitate gentle mixing during germination and also during moisture removal, ie., drying; reduce labour requirement and improve hygiene of the process.
