Abstract

A study was made on the changes in hygienic condition and nutritive value of white maize and cowpeas infested by Sitophilus oryzae and Callosobruchus chinensis during 5 or 6 months. Kernel damage was 65% in maize and 68% in cowpeas. Total uric acid contents were 110 and 220 mg/100 g, and frass contents (insect excreta and other impurities) reached 1.4 and 0.8%, respectively. Insect infestation caused a marked reduction in thiamin content of the grains. Mean weekly growth rates of albino rats given diets with infested and uninfested maize were 3.3 and 5.7 g. Liver of rats given infested maize showed greater cytoplasmic vacuolation and fatty infiltration around the periportal region than that of rats given uninfested maize.
