Abstract
Lindane carried in various vegetable and mineral oils was orally administered to adult albino rats at 125 mg/kg body wt. The use of carriers is to minimise the hazards and risks of lindane to non-target animals. Mortality was higher (60-70%) with lindane carried in coconut, groundnut and mustard oils. All animals recovered with castor oil, SAE 90 (petroleum oil) and Dutrex-10. Toxicity of lindane depended on its solubility in the carriers and viscosity of carriers used; with mineral oil the low solubility of lindane and high viscosity resulted in low or no mortality to mammals.
