Abstract
alpha-Terpineol and dimethyl phenyl carbinol were prepared with good yields (85%) by exposure of an azeotropic mixture of the corresponding olefins, limonene or alpha-pinene and alpha-methylstyrene, to a strong cation exchange resin (H+ form). The corresponding methyl and ethyl ethers were prepared likewise by replacement of the water in the reaction mixture with methanol and ethanol, respectively. Methyl ethers were obtained at yields of 75-80%, but ethyl ethers were accompanied by an equal proportion of the corresponding alcohols, with overall yields of 60-75%.
