Abstract

The comparative effects of ragi (Eleusine coracana) husk and its fractions on the growth of Wistar rats was studied in 2 series of experiments. Addition of destarched or deproteinized husk (8%) or isolated protein (1.4%), neutral-detergent fibre (4.8%) and acid-resistant hemicellulose (0.2%) at levels present in 8% ragi husk to a semisynthetic diet improved the growth of rats. The growth response on the destarched husk was higher than on deproteinized husk in both experiments. Addition of 1.44 g protein isolate at the level present in destarched husk promoted a higher rate of growth, whereas addition of 0.4 g, the level in deproteinized husk, did not. The higher growth response observed in rats given ragi husk may be attributed to the additional amounts of protein contributed by destarched husk and the presence of acid-resistant hemicellulose in the husk samples.
