Abstract
An evaluation was made during 18 months of a special nutrition programme at 3 distribution centres in Mysore, India, where a supplement of 2 slices of bread and 200 to 250 ml of a groundnut protein-based milk substitute was given 6 days a week to children 1 to 5 years old. Compared with children of similar socioeconomic status not receiving the supplements the weights and heights of children given supplements were not significantly different. None of the supplemented children had severe protein-energy malnutrition and 2 children in the control group developed kwashiorkor. Possible reasons for the ineffectiveness of the programme include the supplement being used as a meal substitute and inadequate energy content of the supplement.
