Abstract
Dietary surveys have revealed that fat consumption levels in India range from 36.1 to 44.5 g/day; visible fats account for 9.5-25.7 g fat/day. During the 1st yr of life infants receive about 19-27 g fat/day, mostly from human milk, while in the 2nd yr it decreases to 12-16 g/day. Regional preferences and economic considerations play an important role in the type and amount of fat used, although even poor Indian diets providing around 1000-1300 kcal provide 10 g invisible fat/day.
