Abstract
From dietary surveys carried out in Western India (Gujarat and Maharashtra States), Southern India (Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu States) and Calcutta, fat intakes by different population groups were calculated. The nature and composition of the fat consumed in average Indian diets is discussed and includes ghee/butter, human milk and animal milk (from cows and buffaloes). On average, pre-school children (aged 0-5 yr) in Gujarat State received daily 5.72 g fat from human milk and 2.37 g from animal milk. Children in low-income group received daily 6.69 g from human milk and 1.16 g from animal milk vs. 0.9 g from human milk and 3.87 g from animal milk for children in the high-income group.
