Abstract
The fatty acid composition of serum, liver, heart, kidney and testes was determined in male Indian desert gerbils (Meriones hurrianae; Jerdon) weighing 69.0+-4.7 g (6 weeks old) and compared to that of male albino Wistar rats weighing 160.0+-11.8 g (6 weeks old). Animals were provided with pelleted feed, supplemented with 1% vitamin mix and 2% mineral mix, providing 17, 11.3 and 68.7% protein, fat and carbohydrate, respectively, and water ad libitum. The major fatty acid composition of the diet was palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid at 11.60, 1.60, 30.00, 49.80, 1.80, 0.56 and 0.45%, respectively. Animals were killed after 4 weeks. Triacylglycerols in serum and liver were similar in gerbils and rats. The distribution of polyenoic fatty acids in different lipid fractions differed between rats and gerbils. Total lipids, phospholipids and cholesterol ester fractions in rats contained higher levels of arachidonic acid than in gerbils. It is concluded that the fatty acid composition of Indian gerbils is closer to that of man than rats. The Indian gerbil may be a sensitive species to study atherosclerosis. Data also indicate that it would be a suitable model to study the regulation of delta-6-saturase enzyme, lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase activity and eicosanoid metabolism.
