Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: The present investigation on ‘‘Response of cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale L.) to the surface coatings with calcium salts under low temperature storage conditions’’ has been carried out with an ultimate aim of improving the fruit quality particularly fruit texture and to extend the shelf life. Even though the cashew apple is highly nutritious and available in bulk quantity in the country, it is largely wasted at present. This is due to highly perishable nature of the fruit, improper harvesting and post harvest handling, lack of knowledge on improved post harvest handling, storage and transportation which resulted in poor shelf life of cashew apple. Therefore, here the efforts are focused to find out the better approaches to extend the storage life of cashew apples and to maintain its fruit quality after harvest at low temperature. One method is by means of chemical treatment using calcium salts that has several advantages such as controlling the post harvest decay, reduces fruit respiration rate, maintaining the fruit firmness, increasing the calcium content. More over the direct application of calcium salts to the fruit surface is more effective as little or no subsequent translocation of calcium from leaves to the fruit occurs, when it is applied as pre-harvest foliar sprays.
