Abstract
Adavi chinta (Entada pursaetha) is a leguminous climbing creeper and its seeds are known to possess medicinal value. The total lipid of Entada pursaetha seed kernel was extracted using chloroform: methanol (2:1, v/v) and found to contain 11.2% lipids. The total lipid was separated into neutral (87.7%), glyco- (5.2%) and phospholipids (7.1%) using silica gel column chromatographic method. The fatty acid composition of the total lipid and the lipid classes showed the presence of linoleic, oleic, palmitic, stearic and linolenic acids as major fatty acids. Eicosanoic acid, docosanoic acid and tetracosanoic acids were also observed in trace amounts in all lipid classes except in glycolipids. The glycolipids were found to contain substantial quantities of linolenic (15%) and linoleic (41.2%) acids. The phospholipid fraction was found to be rich in linolenic acid (34.6%) and contained phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine as major components. The seed oil is found to be a good source for food and medicinal applications based on its fatty acid profile.
