Abstract

In present study, biotransformation of caffeine was carried out by fungal strains isolates. Previously isolated five fungal strains F-1, F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8 were used for the induction studies to enhance the biotransformation ability of caffeine. The caffeine biotransformed products were determined by using analytical techniques such as TLC and HPLC. Results from HPLC data showed that among 5, the most potent strain was F-7, showing 79% conversion of caffeine to theophylline. Further induction was done for strain F-7 to enhance the biotransformation ability by gradually increasing the caffeine concentration from 0.05% to 0.5% in CLM and CSL media. The potent fungal strain F-7 shows maximum degradation up to 94%. This isolate was further characterized and was identified at genus level. Based on various cultural and microscopic characteristics it belongs to Fusarium sp. This caffeine biotransforming potential of strain can be utilized for bio-decaffeination of coffee and tea processing waste and decaffeinated coffee production. Its ability can be utilized for large scale production of therapeutically important biotransformed products such as theophylline and other methyl xanthine used in respiratory disorders, has anti-cancerousand anti- inflammatory properties.
