Abstract
Some of the fumigants which are being used against insects can also exert good microbicidal properties At present, some of these chemicals, are being used eo sterilize chambers, jute bags and medical appliances Recently, attempts have been made to use these fumigants or gaseous sterilents to control moulds in grains and processed food materials and in tum to retard the deteriorative changes during storage The advantage of tbese gaseous sterilents are: their diffusibility througb containers of plastic paper, wood or fabrics; ability to sterlize in situ in packets; high penetrability ineo the bulk commodity which the inorganic chemicals do nOt posses; and finally non-persistent nature The disadvantages in the use of many of these fumigants are, their inllammability, toxicity hazards. reaction with the materia1s, the length of time for which the materials are exposed and problems of handling. In this article, an attempt has been made to review the work on the use of fumigants as sterilents in the light of the modem concept of grain sterilization
