Additional Information: | The potential of microalgae for value added metabolites is realized throughout the world. Efforts are continuing to identify the potential organism for their commercial exploitation. One such organism identified is Porphyridium purpureum, a red microalga which produces phycoerythrin, extracellular polysaccharide and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Major problem for mass cultivation of this organism is its slow growth. The present investigation/study focuses on use of different photobioreactors for enhancing the growth and also the high value metabolites. The study includes 1) Lab scale cultivation of P. purpureum, analyzing its growth and pigment content which yielded a good percent of pigment. 2) Evaluation of different photo bioreactor for scaling up of the growth and pigment content of P. purpureum and a suitable configuration for the higher growth was formulated and pigment production was achieved. |
