Additional Information: | Large quantities of material with nutraceutical utility are produced as a byproduct of the oil extraction process. The oil seed cake that is obtained after removal of the oil is used as cattle feed. However, these nutraceuticals have many health benefits and can be used to produce functional foods. In this study the oil seed cakes were analyzed from ten different oil seeds to ascertain the presence of various polyphenols. The presence of various polyphenols and their derivatives in the oil seed cake are verified using Thin Layer Chromatography, UV-Visible spectroscopy and FT-Infrared spectroscopy. Thus, the presence of the valuable nutraceuticals in the oil seed cake can be ascertained. It was found that, the oil content was maximum in coconut followed by almond and sunflower had the least oil content. Based on the presence of the functional groups it can be inferred that Almond seed cake concentrate has α-Tocopherol, Retinol Palmitate and 4-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid. Coconut seed cake concentrate has 4-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid, Retinol Palmitate and Sesamol. Ground Nut seed cake concentrate has Sesamol and Retinol Palmitate. Linseed seed cake concentrate has Retinol Palmitate and Sesamol. Mustard seed cake concentrate has Retinol Palmitate, Oryzanol and α-Tocopherol. Niger seed cake concentrate has Retinol Palmitate and Sesamol. Poppy seed cake concentrate has Retinol Palmitate and Sesamol. Sesame seed cake concentrate has 4-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid and Retinol Palmitate. Soya bean seed cake concentrate has 4-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid. Sunflower seed cake concentrate has 4-Hydroxy Benzoic Acid, Oryzanol and Sesamol. |
