Additional Information: | <p align="justify">Pesticides- “The vehicles of Green Revolution” are toxic to human and animal health. Tonnes of these have been dumped in the environment. They can be removed from contaminated sites by remediation technologies. Microbial remediation is the best option for this purpose.The determination of degradation rate of pesticides through soil is important to assess bioaccumulation of pesticides in the soil. The persistence of pesticide in the soil has been key indicator of bioaccumulation.Methyl parathion is an Organophosphorous pesticide used extensively in India and has caused serious environmental and health hazards. The present investigation aims at studying degradation behavior of Methyl parathion through soil under the influence of varying application rates. Soil samples were collected from agricultural fields in Naganahalli near Srirangapatna, Mysore where there has been known history of Methyl parathion application. Degradation processes in the laboratory were studied using lab-scale batch reactor at 10 and 25 ppm level. Degradation was also attempted in synthetic methyl parathion effluent. Co-metabolic degradation of methyl parathion was tried with phenol as a co-metabolite. The degradation of Methyl parathion was complete in all experiments. A prototype Methyl parathion industrial effluent treatment plant was also proposed. The results of analysis, revealed that the 10 ppm of Methyl parathion was degraded completely by 120 hrs of incubation by the defined microbial consortium with the rate of degradation 0.0202 µg/hr. 95.84 % of 25 ppm Methyl parathion was degraded at a rate of 0.0224 µg/hr. In synthetic effluent Methyl parathion was degraded upto 78.9% with a degradation rate of 0.0099 µg/hr whereas Nitrophenol was degraded completely at a degradation rate of 0.0242 µg/hr.The co-metabolic degradation of Methyl parathion did not help in complete elimination of pesticide with 18% still remaining after 144 hrs with a degradation rate of 0.0092 µg/hr, but Phenol was degraded completely in 72hrs at a degradation rate of 0.04444 µg/hr. Investigative results indicate that Methyl parathion is completely degraded in the sandy clay soil using mixed consortium in the natural condition.</p> |
