Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information:
Agriculture is the main occupation in India. About two- third of the population is situated in villages. In these days of deteriorating ecology, the conditions are not favorable for farmers to grow the traditional crops like paddy, sugarcane, wheat etc.Under these circumstances millet is one, which can replace the traditional in the near future. Millets are small seeded cereals, which are adapted to hot and dry conditions. Thus it is very easy to grow millets compared to other crops. They do not need highly enriched soils and fertilizer inputs and still a good yield can be obtained with less irrigation, low risk and least interest. Millets have their own advantages compared to other traditional crops. It serves the purpose of food as well as fodder. Polishing of millets is required for good cooking purpose. The currently available milling technology has not been introduced for the purpose of polishing of millets. The objective of this project is to study some properties of millets and to provide a new approach for polishing of millets. At CFTRI, in Grain Science and Technology (GST) department, the existing technology for paddy has been used for polishing of millets (Foxtail, Little, Kodo, Barnyard).By analyzing the results, few modifications on the existing machine has been proposed which can polish above said millets effectively and efficiently.
