Abstract

mucllagmous polysacchande-complex found m the seeds 0 adscendens contains an acldlc polysaccharade which has been isolated It 1s composed of Dgalactose (N 20 %), D-galacturonc acid ( w 35 %) and L-rhamnose (N 39 %) Methylatton analysts using GC and GC/MS, Smith degradation, lsolatlon of an acldlc ohgosaccharlde from partial hydrolysates, and enzymlc hydrolysis usmg j-D-galactosldase indicated the polysaccharlde backbone to be --* 4)- GalpA-( 1 + 2)-L-rhap-( 1 + Nearly two-thirds of the rhamnopyranosyl units are O-4 substituted by Dgalactopyranosyl non-reducing end groups
