Abstract
The infestation of jowar must have been carried from the field or the farm premises. The moisture content of jowar, which was around 10-12%, did not change significantly in underground or above ground storage. Germination and free fatty acids were affected in both, but to a greater extent in underground storage. Insect count, kernel damage, and total and true uric acid increased considerably in above ground storage compared to underground storage, whereas apparent uric acid increased in underground pits. These observations have been supported by laboratory studies.
