Abstract

Recently a specific carboximide tmder the trade name Shoxin has been synthesized in U.S.A. and claimed to be toxic only to lWltus rattus. Acute toxicity experiment, of the chemical 'ShQxin' (5-(a-hydroyey-a-Z-pyridylbenzyl)-7a- Z-pyridylbenzylidene-5-norbomene-Z-, 3.dicarboximide), to various animal species were conducted. This chemical did nOi have any effect on the animals like Indian gerbil, guineapigs, rahbits, pigeons and cockerels when fed at 600 mg.{kg. body weight and invertebrates like earthworms and insects. During the experimental period of fifteen days all the animals were normal and did not show any toxic symptom. Shoxin killed Rauu> raltus within two hours at 64mg./ kg. body weight. Albino rats (R. Iwrvegicus) were more susceptible than Rallus raltus and some albino rats died instantaneously at 6 mg,/kg. body weight level. Some anticoagulant and vasodilator dnlgs when tested did no t alter the toxicity of Shoxin.
