Abstract

A simple rapid thin-layer chromatographic method for the analysis of insecticide residues in the urine, faeces and tissues of vertebrates, that was developed in the laboratory in India and tested on rats, is described. In investigations with the aid of the method on the accumulation and distribution of an isomer of BHC called the X-factor [cf. RAE/A 59, 2868], rats were fed for eight weeks on diets containing 50 p.p.m. X-factor, BHC and gamma -BHC (lindane). The proportions of the total intake that were unabsorbed and therefore appeared in the urine and faeces were 21, 39 and 30%, respectively, and the proportion found in the liver, kidney and the whole body 44% for X-factor, 51% for BHC and 35% for gamma -BHC. The treatment did not kill or cause toxic effects in any of the rats.
