Abstract

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages throughout the world and several investigators have studied the physiological effects of coffee, particularly with regard to gastric secretion and motility (1-17). Ivy, Grossman and Bachrach (18) have reviewed exhaustively the effect of caffeine and related beverages on gastric secretion. There is considerable disagreement in the literature concerning the effect of caffeine on gastric secretion, possibly on account of the mal'ked variation in the response of the gastric mechanism to stimulation. The present paper reports the results of in vitru and in vivo studies on the action of coffee on gaStl'ic digestion.
