Abstract

The carbon source plays a major role in the synthesis of exopolysaccharides (EPS), by microorganisms. The effect of various hexose sugars (glucose, sucrose and lactose) on EPS production by selected bacterial cultures {Agrobacterium, Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas) was studied. Among the three sugars used, sucrose (at 3% w/v level) was found to be the best carbon source for Agrobacterium, Alcaligenes, Xanthomonas sp., whereas lactose was most favoured carbon source for Pseudomonas sp. for EPS production, with an yield of 72.38, 92.39, 93.58 and 31.81 g EPS/100 g of sugar, respectively after 72 h of fermentation at 30°C. Highest viscosity of the EPS (880 centi Poise) was obtained with Xanthomonas sp.
