Additional Information: |
Shallots are predominantly recognized as a highly pungent variety of onion and finds common use in South India. So far no work on the effect of Gamma irradiation treatments on physico-chemical characteristics of shallots during ambient storage has been reported. PFA Rules,1954 specify that gamma irradiation at a dose of 30 - 150 Gy can be used to achieve sprout control for extension of shelf life in bulb crops. Hence this study was proposed with the following objectives to assess the changes in pungency of shallot in comparison with big onion under the influence of gamma irradiation treatments. The objectives of the study are: i) To study the effect of gamma irradiation treatments on physico-chemical characteristics of selected varieties of onion under ambient storage condition; ii) To compare the response of onion and shallot under set experimental conditions.; iii) To characterize the changes in distinct chemical parameters of onion and shallots by adopting CCRD for conduct of the experiment.; iv) To assess the extent of control on sprouting and inner bud discoloration in the selected varieties of onion during storage.
|
