Abstract

Callus cultures were initiated from leaf explants of C. cinerariaefolium [Tanacetum cinerariifolium] on MS medium. The cultures were transferred to MS, White's, B-5 or Schenk and Hildebrandt media with 3% sucrose, 2 mg 2,4-D and 5 mg kinetin/litre. Seven C:N:P ratios were compared with a 1:1:1 control (based on 3% sucrose, 840 mg N as ammonium nitrate + potassium nitrate and 170 KH2PO4/litre). Various combinations of IAA, kinetin, IBA, NAA and 2,4-D were also compared. MS medium proved to be most suitable for growth and production of pyrethrins. Callus growth was increased 11-fold with 6% sucrose and 340 mg KH2PO4/litre. The best growth substance combination for production of pyrethrins was 2.0 mg 2,4-D and 5.0 mg kinetin/litre.
