Abstract
Cells of E.rcherichia coli vitamin B,,/methionine auxotroph have been shown to possess an ability to convert tetrahydrofolic acid to N'-formyltetrahydrofolic acid. Optimum conditions for this conversion have been worked out. It was shown that serine is a better one-carbon donor than formate. Vitamin BI' suppresses conversion of tetrahydrofolic acid to N'-formyltetrahydrofolic acid when serine is used as one-carbon donor and stimulates it when the one-carbon donor is formate. Vitamin B" antagonists do not have any effect on tbis conversion.
