Additional Information: | This investigation presents a technique to detect contaminants like pesticides using fluorescence concepts. Fluorescence is the phenomenon in which absorption of light of a given wavelength by a fluorescent molecule is followed by the emission of light at longer wavelengths. Fluorescence detection has three major advantages over other light-based investigation methods like sensitivity, high speed, and safety. Intensity of fluorescence signal is proportional to the concentration of the substance being investigated. Using fluorescence, one can monitor very rapid changes in concentration. Living tissue can be investigated with no adverse effects on its natural physiological behavior. The essential blocks of the device are the fluorimeter and the microcontroller. The principal elements of a fluorimeter are a light source, filters to select appropriate excitation and emission wavelengths, a compartment to house the sample and a photodetector such as PMT. The microcontroller used here is 8052, which is 8-bit microcontroller with 8Kbytes of downloadable Flash programmable and erasable read-only memory and 2Kbytes of EEPROM. The program was developed using 8051 assembler and cross-compiler. The performance of the system developed was evaluated for two wavelengths and tested. |
