Additional Information: Polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) are biodegradable thermoplastics produced by many bacterial species. PHAs are synthesized and stored as a carbon and energy reserve in the cell cytoplasm as water-insoluble inclusions by various microorganisms. Concerted multidisciplinary scientific approaches have been directed to the elucidation of various aspects of PHA. Here, attempts were made to increase the PHA yield by varying the Carbon sources. Also, by incorporating -oxidation pathway inhibitor, the intermediates were channeled to other PHA biosynthesis pathways increasing PHA yield. Growth curve studies of PHA producers were carried out in Fermentor. The amylase assay was carried out for the samples which were promising production of both PHA and amylase in the same culture. These polymers do not show cytotoxicity, immune toxicity, sensitizing and hemolyzing activities and do not cause an immediate allergic reaction. Thus, can be used in medical field. The mechanical and biocompatibility of PHA can also be changed by blending, modifying the surface or combining PHA with other polymers, enzymes and inorganic materials, making it possible for a wider range of applications. Based on the wealth of information that has been gathered to date, PHA seems to hold great promise as an environmentally friendly polymeric material. In a world with shrinking petroleum reserves and increasing environmental issues, PHA is definitely a potential candidate that deserves further exploration.
