Abstract

The desiccated coconut industry is of very recent origin in this country and has not yet developed as in other major coconut growing regions like Ceylon and Philippines which export large quantities to world markets1. The annual requirement of desiccated coconut in India is estimated to be about 200 tons2 and is mostly met by imports from Ceylon ; few small factories for the processing of desiccated coconut have come up in the country in recent years. Several development schemes have been launched by various State Governments during the 2nd and 3rd Five-Year Plans to step up production of coconuts3 and there is a great potential scope for developing the desiccated coconut industry to meet the growing internal demand and also for exports to acquire valuable foreign exchange. With the object of obtaining technical information on various aspects of processing and storage of desiccated coconut, an investigation was undertaken and the preliminary results obtained are briefly presented in this communication. For the benefit of industry, project cost data are also included.
