| Additional Information: | Karanja (Pongamia glabra) is one of the commonest trees of India and its seed oil is plentiful. The oil is used after extraction as non-edible industrial oil.The seed contains 30-35% oil and around 20-28% of proteins. The usage of proteins is restricted by the presence of some anti-nutritional compounds present both in oil and meal. A group of 3-methoxy 2,3,7,8 furano flavonoids (karanjin) present only in karanja seeds constituting around 3-9% by weight of the oil along with other anti-nutritional components restricts the usage of oil and , meal as a food/feed, though it is a rich source of protein both in terms of quantity and quality protein, with balanced amino acids. The present investigation deals with the study of anti-nutritional components present in different varieties of karanja seed meal and oil. Antinutritional components studied are karanjin, tannins , phytates , trypsin inhibitors and saponins . Extraction, separation and characterization of karanjin was carried out following solvent fractionation, column chromatography, HPLC and LC-MS. Saponins which are found in sizable amount (1-5%) in various varieties were separated and isolated by preparative TLC and were characterized by HPLC. Removal of these anti-nutritional factors from oil and meal has been approached by different method and may provide a value addition to karanja seed as feed/food ingredient, industrial and therapeutic purposes. |
