Abstract
165 strains of staphylococci were isolated from 1490 eggs obtained from retail outlets in N., S., W. and central zones of India in 3 different seasons. 30.9% of the strains were coagulase positive, with greatest numbers coming from S. and E. regions during summer and rainy seasons; about a third were of human origin. Correlations of the coagulase positive test with other pathogenicity studies are shown; of 51 coagulase positive strains examined correlation was 100% with animal inoculation studies, 94% with the haemolysin test, 93% with salt resistance test, 86% with nitrate reduction, 80.4% with chromogenesis, 64.7% with mannitol positive, 53% with egg yolk opacity, 49% with fibrinolytic activity, and 39% with gelatin liquefaction.
