Abstract
The growth of albino rats fed diets based on rice or ragi was compared with that of rats given similar diets with 25% of the cereal replaced by jackfruit seed flour (JFSF). Weight gains recorded were 47.0 g and 51.8 g, respectively for diets containing ragi and ragi + JFSF, and 22.9 g and 30.0 g, respectively, for diets containing rice and rice + JFSF. However, the corresponding feed efficiency ratios were 0.15 and 0.16 for ragi and 0.10 and 0.11 for rice diets, respectively without or with replacement of ceral with JFSF, and differences were not significant. It was concluded that replacing 25% of rice or ragi with JFSF did not improve the growth promoting value of the diets.
