Abstract

The growth of Scenedesmus acutus in the aerated medium containing minerals and urea was improved by adding CO2 or molasses; with both optimum growth of 25 g DM/m2 day was obtained. Composition was protein 43 to 58, lipid 9 to 12, fibre 10 to 14, ash 10 to 21, carbohydrate 6 to 8 and nucleic acid 3 to 6% of dry algae. Available lysine was 3.7% of protein. The algae were rich in water-soluble vitamins and had considerable amounts of P, Ca and Fe. The dried algae when supplemented with methionine gave a protein efficiency ratio (PER) close to that of casein in studies with rats. Values for PER, net protein utilization and biological value were higher for drum-dried algae than for algae dried in the sun. Algae were useful for supplementing diets based on rice, sorghum and wheat.
