Abstract
Weanling Wistar rats of both sexes had vitamin A-deficient diets until growth was retarded or they were acutely deficient, when they were transferred to metabolism cages and 24-h urine was collected; creatinine, nondialysable N and arylsulphatase (EC 3.1.61) activity were estimated and correlated with liver vitamin A in the vitamin A-deficient and a similar group of rats given supplementary vitamin. The effects of starvation, followed by refeeding or a single dose of vitamin A, were also examined in adult rats. There was a significant reduction in urinary sulphatase A and B activities in vitamin A-deficient male rats, whilst depression of arylsulphatase A activity only was observed in the females; these effects were evident at the 'weight plateau' stage, before reduction in food intake or bodyweight occurred. In male rats starved for 24 h, urinary sulphatase A and B activities increased; oral dosage of retinyl acetate caused a significant fall in activity of both enzymes; refeeding brought a return to normal only for arylsulphatase A.
