Abstract

This investigation was carried out in 2 parts: (i) a study of the effect of different wax emulsions of different concn. on the storage behaviour of coccinia, (carnauba wax, microcrystalline wax and sugarcane wax emulsions at 8 and 4% concn. were tested); and (ii) a study of the influence of growth regulators incorporated in the wax emulsion on the storage behaviour. In (i) carnauba wax emulsion gave the best results, increasing the storage life from 2-3 days (untreated control samples) to 6 days. 4% concn. of wax emulsion gave better results than 8%. Results of (ii) showed that shelf-life of coccinia was prolonged by incorporation of 1000-2000 ppm maleic hydrazide and 25-50 ppm diphenylamine in the wax emulsion. Ripening and rate of respiration were retarded in treated coccinia. Maleic hydrazide at 2000 ppm in combination with carnauba wax emulsion proved the best treatment, prolonging the shelf-life to 10 days by delaying ripening, and reducing physiological wt. loss and moisture loss.
