Abstract

Suitability of ferrite chromium steel (16-18% chromium and free from Ni) for making domestic food utensils was studied. Tables are given of corrosion resistance of ferrite chromium strips to organic acid solutions and mixtures of acid and salt solutions at 37 degree C, 55 degree C and boiling for 5 h. Where heating to the higher temp. is not involved, ferric steel is as suitable as austenitic steel (containing Ni) for dinner plates and other utensils. Boiling in a mixture of 5% citric malic or tartaric acids
