Abstract

Efficacy of fumigants (methyl formate, methyl bromide, methyl iodide, ethylene oxide, ethylene dibromide and acrylonitrile) in controlling insect infestation and preventing mould attack in papads, of varying moisture has been investigated at dosages of 32 and 64 mg/l. During one month storage period, ethylene oxide was most effective on papads containing 20 per cent moisture even at a dosage of 32 mg/l. Acrylonitrile, methyl iodide and methyl bromide were however effective, only at the higher dosage of 64 mg/l. All the fumigants except ethylene dibromide and methyl formate were effective at 32 and 64 mg/l. dosages on papads with 18 per cent moisture. Papads with moisture contents of 14 and 16 per cent were free from insect infestation and mould growth.
