Abstract

With a view to isolating potent amino acid-excreting microorganisms, a number of bacteria, actinomycetes and yeasts obtained from soil, sewage, fruits, vegetables, meat and fish were screened. The cultures that excreted appreciable amounts of glutamic acid, alanine and proline belonged to the genera Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Rhodotorula and Streptomyces. One isolate of Arthrobacter sp. excreted glutamic acid without showing requirements for any vitamin growth factor. Some of the best glutamic acid excretors obtained were comparable to the standard glutamic acid excreting bacteria (e.g. Brevibacterium flavum ATCC 14067 and Micrococcus glutamicus ATCC 13032). Preliminary studies have shown that 2 cultures, viz. Arthrobacter sp. No. 189 and Rhodotorula sp. No 220 possess the desirable quality of easy mutability with chemicals, high and low energy radiations so that potent amino acid excretors may be derived from them.
