Abstract

The advantages of juvenile hormone over fumigation and conventional organic insecticides are given. Preliminary results of tests using a chemical analogue of juvenile hormone methyl 3,7,11-trimethyl-7,11-dichloro-2- dodecenoate (UTDD) in controlling multiplication of pests in stored grain are reported. UTDD was synthesized and purified according to the method of Romanuk et al. [Proc. US Nat. Acad. Sci., (1967) 57:349]. Pests of wheat flour, spices and pulses were tested. Known amounts of UTDD dissolved in ether were thoroughly mixed with the foodstuff. The test insect in known numbers was added to the treated foodstuff and observations made for egg-laying and larval development. A table of results is included showing the effect of 4 concn. of UTDD on the development of both eggs and larvae of the pest Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) on wheat flour. UTDD may be successfully used in preventing development of a 2nd generation of insect pests of stored grain. The concn. of the chemical required seems to vary with the nature of the stored food and/or the type of insect.
