Abstract

Cereal and legume-based weaning foods often form high bulk products after addition of liquid, which can limit the nutrient intake of the child. To overcome this disadvantage, low bulk weaning foods are often prepared, either by using malted cereals or by adding cereal malt to high bulk foods. In this study, preference of weanling rats for high or low bulk weaning foods was investigated. Weaning foods were prepared from: malted wheat + malted chick peas (MWF); popped wheat + popped chick peas (PWF); a roller dried blend of wheat and chick peas (RWF); PWF + 5% barley malt flour (PWFM); and RWF + 5% barley malt flour (RWFM). Rats were given access either to pairs of corresponding low and high bulk foods (e.g RWF and RWFM) or to all 5 foods at the same time. After a 3 wk experimental period, it was found that animals consumed both foods in the pair trials and all foods in the multiple choice trials. However, intake of low bulk foods was higher by 27 and 62% in the pair and multiple trials, respectively. Wt. gain of rats given RWF + RWFM and PWF + PWFM was 44.2 and 46.2 g, respectively, whereas rats given access to all 5 foods underwent an average wt. gain of 52.2 g.
