Abstract
Physicochemical properties of films prepared from blends of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were investigated. Films contained chitosan:PVA ratios of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 or 0:100. Increases in the chitosan contents of the films led to improved optical properties, increased tensile strength and decreased percentage elongation at break. Moisture contents increased with increases in PVA concn. Moisture sorption isotherms demonstrated a sigmoid pattern. Of the 8 models used to describe the moisture sorption data, the best fit was achieved with the GAB model.
