Abstract
Optimal operating conditions for a simultaneous saccharification and ethanol fermentation system were investigated using Saccharomyces cerevisiae NRRL-Y-132 cells, cellulase (Celluclast(R)) from Trichoderma reesei QM 9414 and sugar cane leaves as a low-cost raw material. Sugar cane leaves were pretreated in order to increase enzyme efficiency; best pretreatment results were observed with alkaline hydrogen peroxide. Max. conversion (92%) of a 2.5% alkaline hydrogen peroxide-treated sugar cane leaf substrate to sugars was observed at 50
