Abstract

One of the most crucial factors influencing profitability in marketing of fruits at places far away from the site of production is the post-harvest life of the commodity at ambient conditions. Monetary benefits to the producers depend on factors such as harvesting, maturity at harvest, conditions of packaging, transport and storage of the fruits. Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn) is a highly priced sub-tropical fruit in great demand in the European market. Export trade is therefore gaining considerable importance. One of the major problems during post-harvest handling, transport and/or storage is browning of the rind, besides curtailment of fruit storage life by ageing and decay. Litchis can be stored for about 3 days under ambient conditions (20-35
